The US dollar currently is the world’s reserve currency. What that means, other currencies are ‘backed’ by the dollar. Foreign central banks hold USdollars as a reserve, making their own currencies more valuable. It has replaced the previous standard, the gold standard because the USD was ‘good as gold.’
